Sept. 24, 2004 IF YOU WATCH TV, YOUR CHILD WILL WATCH TV
Limit your and your child’s TV time to
2 hours per day. It doesn’t work to tell them to go play while
you watch a movie. If you watch TV, they’ll watch TV and they’ll learn that its OK to
spend hours doing it. Watching TV lets
children be passive. They don’t have to think because the TV thinks
for them. Children learn by modeling the
behavior of others. They’ll model their behavior after what they see on TV if you don’t give them another
example to follow. Beware of
“kid’s” movies and
programming. Role-playing Listening to audio books What if you have too
much else to do? Let your child help! Children love to do what
their parents do. Washing dishes Vacuuming Sweeping—let them hold the dustpan Cooking—let them stir and mix Folding laundry—let them sort the socks Raking leaves Pulling weeds Getting the mail Organizing your purse Give them simple chores and reward them when
they’re done. They will also get sensory experience that
is priceless. It takes a lot of energy to
be a good parent. Take care of yourself so you can take care of
your child. --------------- |
There is often subtle distasteful content that is really meant
for adults. Children pick up on things more
than we like to believe. --------------------- TURN OFF THE T.V. TO TURN ON YOUR CHILD’S MIND The key to unlocking your child’s mind and encourage learning is
to turn off the TV. You don’t control what
is on TV. But you do have control of the ON/OFF switch. Just say, for
one hour.” Once the TV is off you will have control of your
child’s environment.
